Tawara Shrine

Tawara Shrine is located not far from Matsue Castle, and the guardian lions on the approach are said to be the largest in Shimane Prefecture. The shrine grounds have many cherry blossom trees and azaleas, and are particulary stunning in spring and autumn.

The gods of the srine are Takemikazuchi, Futsunushi, Ameno-koyane and Hime-ookami. It is said however, that the shrines that used to be in the area combined and there are actually 31 gods enshrined here.

The main god Takemikazuchi, is the god of thunder, and he was born from a drop of blood that fell from the sword of Izanagi, when he slayed Kagutsuchi, the god of fire.

Takemikazuchi is the god of sword fighting, martial arts and archery.

Getting There: Take the Lakeline bus from Matsue Station and get off at Shiomi Nawate. From there it is around a 15 minute walk.
