Lake Shinji is the 7th largest lake in Japan, and is one of the main tourist spots in Matsue. It is a spectacular sight at amy time of the day, but particularly at sunset, when the sky and water display a myriad of colours and shades.
The best place to take photos is the east bank, from where you can capture the sun sinking over Yomegashima Island into the mountains beyond.
Yome-ga-shima Island was formed from volcanic activity and contains a sacred shrine which is only open to visitors at certain times of the year. According to local legend, it appeared one night when a young wife drowned while attempting to cross the frozen lake in an attempt to escape her lonely and unhappy life.
