The Ichibata Railway runs from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station to Izumo Taisha. It opened over 100 years ago to transport pilgrims from Matsue to Ichibata Yakushi Temple in Hirata, half-way between Matsue and Izumo, hence the name Ichibata.
On the way, the train travels along Lake Shinji and through some stunning rural landscapes, and in addition to the mountain temple Ichibata Yakushi, it also stops at the English Garden, Vogel Park and Izumo Taisha.
At Shinjiko Onsen Station, you can rent bicylces and take them on the train so you can explore some of the more rural areas along the route. (An extra 300 yen per bicycle. Rental charge is separate.)
If you plan to visit a few places along the way, we recommend you buy the one day pass. (1500 yen)
